A picturesque small town surrounded by some of the Bern canton’s most impressive mountains, when it comes to wonderful views, where better to visit in Switzerland than Interlaken? Lying right on the edge of the Jungfrau Mountain, it’s a part of the country that’s become increasingly popular with tourists who want something a little different from the usual skiing holiday.
Given its proximity to the Swiss capital, Interlaken is pretty easy to get to, but it’s also home to some unique activities and landmarks which help make both the town and the surrounding areas stand out as a holiday destination. You might wonder what there is to do here: Inghams holidays reps Liz and Mike Cakebread have a few suggestions that might take your fancy.
Boating on Lake Brienz
Just a short trip away from Interlaken itself, the lake and its famous emerald green waters are begging to be explored. A gentle ride around the lake will provide you plenty of opportunities to take photos and spot a few landmarks such as the top of Jungfrau.
Once you get off, you can see the Grand Hotel Giessbach and its famous Waterfalls, then stroll through the village of Brienz. Should you have a little more time to space, the Museum Ballenberg, is Switzerland’s biggest open-air museum.
Journey to the Jungfraujoch
High up on Jungfrau, Europe’s highest railway station sits, and it’s very easy to get to from Interlaken, providing you’ve got a valid ticket! Once you get off the train, you could visit the Aletschgletcher, the continent’s longest glacier and take part in numerous activities like skiing or husky rides.
For something you could do there, visits to the glacier’s Ice Palace and walks to the nearby Monchshutte could keep you occupied for a few hours at least if you crave adventure.
Revolving raclette
For a bite to eat with pizzazz, where could be better than the revolving Schilthorn? Famous for featuring in the Bond movie ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, it pays homage to its role in the film with its ‘James Bond Brekkie’ buffet.
On the theme of eating out, the Metropole hotel offers dining from the 15th floor, where you get amazing panoramic views of both the two lakes and most of Interlaken.
By following the sage advice of Liz and Mike, if you do decide to pay a visit to this part of the world, you won’t be short of things to see and do, whether you’re relaxing in your chalet or slaloming down the snow-capped peaks of Jungfrau.
