Durbar Square is the architectural highlight of the city of Bhaktaur. Its true wealth, however, lies in the rest of the city. It’s Nepal’s best-preserved medieval city and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What I really like about Bhaktapur is that it’s a living city. The citizens still live and play among the ancient monuments. They sit and socialize around temples and hold festivals in their squares. The city has been described as a living museum.
The best way to enjoy Bhaktapur is simply to wander through its streets. A walk around the town will reveal old men chatting, chili peppers laid out for drying, chickens pecking for food, and children walking home from school.
Spend the night to get a better feel for Bhaktapur. It’s only 13 km from Kathmandu, but feels a world away. The whole of the old city is closed to traffic, so you’ll only have to navigate through the local pedestrians and the few foreigners who take the little time and effort it requires to visit this highlight of Nepal.
