Tiger's Nest Monastery

Seldom are sights alone worth long and arduous journeys. Even if Bhutan weren’t the complete travel experience; it would still be worth the effort if only to see Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

The monastery’s setting, perched high on a cliff-face, half-way up a mountain side, is stunning. Tiger’s Nest, known as Paro Taktsang, was founded in 1692 at the cave where it is believed Guru Padmasambhava meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours in the 8th century. He is credited with bringing Buddhism to Bhutan.

The monastery is reached via a 2-3 hour hike in the upper Paro Valley of eastern Bhutan.
