Changing of Guard at Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea
One of the unexpected highlights of visiting Seoul was the changing of guard at Gyeongbokgung Palace. It’s an elaborate ceremony with several dozen men in Joseon Dynasty-era costume. The effect of the event, even with all the onlookers, is stunning. Since 1469 these royal guards have performed the task of guarding the Gwanghwamun Gate, at the entrance of Gyeongbokgung Palace, where the king ruled over Korea. The daily event is revered by both foreign tourists and locals alike.
Performance times for the changing of guard at Gyeongbokgung Palace happen everyday (except Tuesday) at 10am and 2pm, lasting 20 minutes. The Gwanghwamun Gate Guard-on-Duty Performance goes on at 11am and 1pm. If you’re up for more, see the Sumungun (Gatekeeper) Military Training (outside Hyeopsaengmun Gate) at 9:30am and 1:30 pm.
