The Best Travel Writing of Don George Book Review
Don George has been a travel writer for over 40 years. In that time he has compiled and edited The Best of American Travel Writing, Lonely Planet, and even a book written about how to be a travel writer, and yet he has never penned a book of his own travels.
The Way of Wanderlust: The Best Travel Writing of Don George, is a collection of his favorite stories that he’s written over the years. Broken into three categories: Pilgrimages, Encounters, and Illuminations, we can see his transformation as a writer, as a traveler, and as a person.
Don George is the very definition of a storyteller. Each of his pieces had me captivated from the start. Whether he was sleeping on the roof of a Greek hostel, making friends in the Cambodian jungle, or heading to Thanksgiving in his own hometown, he makes me want to get up and go. He makes me want to be a better storyteller.
Each story is introduced with a short excerpt about why it was written, where it was originally published and why he felt compelled to tell it. As a travel writer I found this incredibly helpful in learning how to focus my own tales, as a reader I found it aided in my understanding of the article.
We see him go from a young man exploring the world to an English teacher in Japan, a married man traveling the world with his wife to a father learning to travel with his family. Several of his stories brought me to tears. He has this incredible way of expressing his emotions, of showing, not just telling, and it pulls at your heart strings. He is entirely relatable whether you’ve traveled the world your whole life or you’ve never left your hometown.
His words made me think more about my own journeys and how they have affected and changed me in so many ways. I found myself constantly underlining whole paragraphs that really spoke to me.
“Travel teaches us about love. It teaches us that the very best we can do with our lives is to embrace the people, places, and cultures we meet with all our mind, heart, and soul, to live as fully as possible in every moment, every day.”
Read The Way of Wanderlust to escape the mundane, to travel the world from the comfort of your couch, or read it to spark the wanderlust within.
